ABANDONMENT AND STRAYS
However, abandoned pets become strays or are put down (euthanised). Homeless animals on the streets can suffer from diseases, fighting, starvation and abuse! They also contribute to the stray population.
Abandonment is deemed an act of animal cruelty. It is punishable under the law by a fine of up to $10000 or a jail term of up to 12 months, or both.
You can prevent the increase in number of stray animals by:
• Thinking very carefully before you get a pet so you are ready and able to keep it for the rest of its life.
• Getting your pet sterilised so that it will not add to the number of strays.
• Not abandoning your pet – find a new home for it if you really cannot keep it anymore.
